03/09 Thatcham Marsh LNR

Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR
Session: 03-Sep-2017 06:30 to 10:00hrs
Headlines: The first post CES session so we used audio. The forecast was not good with rain due to arrive about 09:00hrs. Light rain began around this time so we took the nets down at 09:30hrs; we were capturing good numbers of birds and did not want to risk a downpour. As it turned out the heavy rain never arrived despite it showing on the rain radar. A text saying there was a Black Tern and a Ruff at Lower Farm GP, may have had influence this decision! Had it not rained we would probably have exceeded last year’s matching total. We were still catching in good numbers when we took the nets down. A decent tit flock is a rarity this year so a capture of 12 and then 7 in the scrub net was welcome. One of  the Blue Tits was a DL ringed bird (Z876088). There are still a few acrocephalus warblers about but not in the number here most years in early September. We saw the Black Tern but could not find the Ruff.
Weather: Overcast, calm early, warm, light rain later (session abandoned)
Present: JL, JHW, IW, EMH
Nets: 210metres  in one reed bed ride of 108M+90M and one scrub ride of 12M
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Reed Bunting, Redstart, Aquatic Warbler(got to ride your luck) intermittently
