03/12 Greenham Common Feeder

Location: Greenham Common Estovers Feeder
Session: 03-Dec-2017 07:30 to 11:20hrs
Headlines: Early captures kept us busy until birds slowed coming to the feeder mid- session. The scrub areas were very quiet. This visit 3 capture is different to the equivalent 16/17 winter visit in that Blue Tit and Goldfinch numbers are back to normal levels so far this season. The few winter thrushes flying over did not react to the audio unlike last winter’s equivalent visit. The Greenfinch flock was very wary and did not drop down to the feeders; probably the time between rounds was insufficient for them to settle. Being further from the nearest substantial woodland than the Bagnor and Snelsmore fewer tits visit here; numbers often increase later in the day as those visiting have further to travel. The eight years totals for visit 3 show this visit to be nearer the norm than the 2016/17 winter.
Weather: spotting with rain early, cloudy later, cool, calm
Present: JL, JHW, IW, DL, GB, JPM
Nets: 72metres: 12m ,12m, 10m around feeders, 18m, 10m, 10m in scrub up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (feeder): niger, niger, black sunflower, peanuts, black sunflower
(audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Redwing intermittently
